Iron Status
This panel measures 6 markers to map both your iron stores and how efficiently iron moves around your body.
Is the Iron Status right for you?
- Persistent fatigue, weakness or poor concentration — low iron is one of the most common causes
- Heavy or frequent menstrual bleeding, a leading cause of iron deficiency in women
- Following a vegetarian or vegan diet, which can make it harder to keep iron stores topped up
- A family history of haemochromatosis, an iron overload condition common in people of Northern European descent
- Wanting to check whether iron is actually low before spending on supplements, or monitoring known iron issues
6 markers, explained in plain English
This panel measures 6 markers to map both your iron stores and how efficiently iron moves around your body. Ferritin reflects the iron held in reserve — the most sensitive early marker of deficiency, often low before anaemia appears — while serum iron, transferrin and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) describe your body's capacity to carry iron. Transferrin saturation shows what proportion of that capacity is filled, which runs high in overload and low in deficiency. Together these can help a clinician identify or rule out both iron deficiency and iron overload.
Markers you can also test on their own
Every marker in the Iron Status can also be booked individually. Tap a marker to learn what it measures and why it's tested.

Your questions about the Iron Status
What does an iron status blood test show? +
It measures serum iron, ferritin (your iron stores), transferrin, total iron binding capacity and transferrin saturation. Together these can help a clinician identify or rule out iron deficiency — even before it causes anaemia — as well as iron overload. Every result is reviewed by a clinician who explains what it means.
Do I need to fast before this test? +
Iron levels can vary through the day and after meals, so we often recommend a morning appointment and may ask you to avoid iron supplements beforehand. Our team will confirm any preparation when you book.
What happens if a result comes back abnormal? +
A clinician reviews every panel before it is released. If something is outside the normal range, we explain what it means in plain English and recommend sensible next steps — which may include a GP appointment, a repeat test, or onward referral. This test is a screening investigation and is not a substitute for a clinical diagnosis.
